Curran Crushes Royals: RR Lose Fourth Straight Match

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) dream run in IPL 2024 has come to a screeching halt. After a dominant spell at the top of the table, they slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat, falling to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 5 wickets in Guwahati on Wednesday.

The hero for PBKS was their young all-rounder, Sam Curran. He displayed a well-rounded performance, first restricting the Royals to a below-par score of 144 with his bowling, and then anchoring the chase with a crucial 63 off 41 balls.

RR’s batting woes continued. After losing Yashasvi Jaiswal early, none of their batsmen could build a substantial partnership. Sanju Samson, the captain, tried his best with a 38, but the lack of support from the other end proved costly. The disciplined bowling attack of PBKS, with contributions from Arshdeep Singh and Rahul Chahar, never allowed RR batsmen to settle down.

Chasing a modest target, PBKS openers Mayank Agarwal and Jonny Bairstow provided a solid start. While Bairstow fell cheaply, Agarwal continued to bat sensibly. Curran arrived at the crease with the score at 58/2 and took control of the innings. He played some delightful strokes and stitched crucial partnerships with Liam Livingstone and Kagiso Rabada to ensure a comfortable victory for his team.

This loss extends RR’s losing streak and puts their top-two finish in jeopardy. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have already secured the top spot, and with their current form, RR might have to settle for a spot in the eliminator. The Royals must find their winning ways back quickly if they want to challenge for the IPL title.

Key performers:

  • Sam Curran (PBKS): 2 wickets for 25 runs, 63 runs off 41 balls
  • Sanju Samson (RR): 38 runs off 32 balls
  • Arshdeep Singh (PBKS): 2 wickets for 18 runs

Looking ahead:

RR must address their batting form and bowling consistency if they want to bounce back in the playoffs. PBKS, on the other hand, will be looking to carry this momentum forward and secure a place in the top four.
